First decide whether the job needs a torque tool

A torque wrench is useful when a manufacturer specifies a tightening value and the joint needs repeatability. It is not a universal cure for “tight enough”. Many FPV repairs involve tiny board screws, connectors or plastic housings whose range is below an automotive wrench; a suitable torque screwdriver may be the correct category.

For a pilot trying to repair a flight controller or ESC before the next weekend meet, speed can tempt guesswork. Stop and find the frame, motor, propeller or component maker's current instructions. Record the value and its unit exactly. N·m and N·cm are not interchangeable labels, and a value copied from a different model is not evidence.

Match the range, drive and interface

Range: confirm that the target falls within the maker's declared usable and accuracy range, not merely below the printed maximum.
Interface: choose the drive and bit that fully fit the fastener. Adapter stacks add access and alignment problems.
Direction: confirm whether the tool is specified to measure in the direction required by the joint.
Resolution: the scale or display must let the user set and read the target without pretending to more precision than the tool declares.

A click wrench is quick once correctly set, a beam tool makes deflection visible, and a digital tool can give an approaching-target alert. Type does not rescue a range mismatch. For small bench hardware, compare torque screwdrivers before buying a large-drive wrench.

Use the specification as a process, not a number

Inspect the fastener, threads and mating surface; replace damaged parts rather than measuring damage more precisely.
Follow the maker's statement on dry threads, lubricant, thread-locker, washers and tightening sequence.
Pull smoothly at the handle position described in the tool instructions. Stop at the indicated event; repeated clicks add load.
Do not use a torque wrench as a breaker bar unless its maker explicitly permits that use.
After a crash, overload, drop or suspect result, quarantine the tool until its performance is checked.

These controls are more valuable than a generic internet table. A table cannot know the material, thread condition, propeller hardware or revision on the aircraft in front of you.

Calibration and records: the ISO 6789 boundary

ISO 6789-2:2017 says the user should choose the interval from factors such as required error, frequency of use, load and storage. Where the user has no control procedure, 12 months or 5,000 cycles—whichever comes first—may be used as default values from first use. It also calls for calibration after an applicable overload, repair or improper handling that could affect performance.

That is a default, not a universal UK legal deadline. A club tool used every weekend, a business-critical tool or one carried in a crash box may need a shorter evidence-based interval. Record first-use date, cycles where practical, incidents and calibration results.

Torque control and board rework are separate

A torque tool can control a specified fastener; it cannot replace hot-air process control for a MOSFET or connector on a flight controller. Do FPV repairs need a torque wrench?
